How to read gloves labels

HOW TO

READ THE LABEL

Reading an ANSI/ISEA 105 label is all about understanding the numbers inside and around the shield (or pentagon). This icon provides a quick snapshot of how well a glove protects you against safety hazards.

NEW SAFETY ICON FOR ANSI/ISEA 105:

1. Cut Resistance Level (Center)

2. Puncture Resistance Level (Right Side)

3. Abrasion Resistance Level (Left Side)

Quick Tip: If you see an icon with only one number in the middle, it is likely an older marking and only focuses on one level of protection, like a cut, puncture, or abrasion resistance. The "pentagon" style is the newer format designed to show all three protections in one place. An “X” indicates that classification or rating was not tested or is not applicable for that product.

Cut Resistant Gloves

CUT RESISTANCE

ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 for Cut Resistant gloves is based on the ASTM F2992-15 testing method, which uses a Tomodynamometer (TDM-100) machine to measure the amount of weight (grams) necessary for a blade to cut through material. Increasing weights are added to achieve cut-through on the glove material. The blade is replaced after each cut and weight (grams) is added until cut-through is obtained. Multiple tests are conducted and the average is recorded to give the final gram rating (ranging from 200 to 6000 grams). These results are represented by levels A1 to A9, with the greater number being the higher the level of cut resistance.

CUT RESISTANCE IS RATED ON A SCALE FROM A1 TO A9:

A1-A2: Minimal to Light Protection

A3-A4: Light to Medium Protection

A5-A6: Medium to Heavy Duty Protection

A7-A9: Heavy Duty to Maximum Protection

Puncture Resistant Gloves

PUNCTURE RESISTANCE

ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 for Puncture Resistance is based on the EN 388 testing method, which tests the maximum force required for a blunt puncture probe to penetrate a specimen held firmly between two plates in a sample holder. The blunt probe used in the test is similar to a ballpoint pen in size and shape, and penetrates the test fabric at a 90° angle at 100mm/min. Increasing weights are added to achieve puncture of the glove material. Multiple tests are conducted and the average is recorded to give the final newton rating (ranging from 10 to 150 newtons). These results are represented by levels 1 to 5, with the greater number being the higher level of puncture resistance.

PUNCTURE PROTECTION IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT

FOR WORKERS INVOLVED IN:

Construction and demolition

Waste handling and recycling

Landscaping and forestry

Industrial maintenance

Abrasion Resistant Gloves

ABRASION RESISTANCE

ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 for Abrasion Resistance is based on ASTM D3389-10 (coated glove fabrics or unsupported gloves) and ASTM D3884-09 (uncoated glove fabrics), that test the glove’s abrasion resistance by determining the number of revolutions (abrasion cycles) to failure. The test method uses a 4-inch circular sample (cut from the palm) mounted on a horizontal axis platform while being abraded to failure under a specified vertical weight load (500 or 1000 grams) by the sliding rotation of two vertically oriented H-18 abrading wheels comprised of vitrified clay and silicon carbide abrasive particles. The results, recorded in revolutions, are represented by levels 0 to 6, with the greater number being the higher level of abrasion resistance.

HIGH ABRASION RESISTANCE IS ESSENTIAL FOR TASKS

THAT INVOLVE:

Handling rough materials

Pulling cables or rope

Working with tools and equipment

Repetitive material handling

Impact Protection Gloves

IMPACT PROTECTION

ANSI/ISEA 138-2019 establishes performance levels, testing and classification for gloves designed to protect the fingers and knuckles from impacts while performing occupational tasks. The standard is designed to test multiple impact points on the fingers and knuckles, resulting in three levels of measurement. This American National Standard is an evolution of the existing European Standard for impact – EN 388:2016. Test results are represented by performance levels 1, 2, or 3. Level 3 is the highest level of protection.

IMPACT PROTECTION IS ESPECIALLY VALUABLE IN

INDUSTRIES SUCH AS:

Oil and gas

Construction

Utilities

Heavy equipment operation

Material handling
