Tips on Choosing the Right Summer Work Shirt

For a lot of people who work in industries like construction and agriculture, summer is no time to slack off — in fact, it may be even busier than other seasons. And between potential sunburn, biting mosquitoes and lots and lots of sweat, summer can get pretty nasty. So, if you’re headed out on the job this summer, your body will thank you for picking up a great work shirt that will keep you comfortable on the job. What should you look for in a summer work shirt? And what are HiVis Supply’s best options for high visibility summer work shirts? It’s time to have a little fun in the sun.

What Do You Need from Your Summer Work Shirt?

Any time you buy safety workwear, you should always start by thinking about your specific needs. So, here are some questions to begin with when you choose a summer work shirt:

  • Are you required to wear a specific type of shirt, such as a T-shirt or button-up?
  • How often will you be working in direct sunlight?
  • What are the average summer outdoor temperatures like in your area?
  • Does your job require you to wear long sleeves for safety?
  • Do you need ANSI 107 high visibility rated garments?

The best work shirts are built for tough, flexible, versatile performance through the hottest summer days. On top of that, your summer shirts should also have any high visibility and/or other safety features that you need to stay safe and visible.

Summer Work Shirt Features to Look For

For maximum outdoor performance, you’ll want to look for some or all of the following features in your summer work shirt:

  • High Visibility: Many work shirts come equipped with ANSI 107-rated high visibility features such as fluorescent colors and retroreflective materials. Non-ANSI enhanced visibility models can also give you great value if your job doesn’t require ANSI-rated hi vis gear.
  • Moisture Wicking: A moisture-wicking shirt draws moisture away from your skin and brings it to the surface of the garment where it can evaporate more easily. This keeps you more comfortable during your workday and helps prevent chafing.
  • Comfort and Breathability: During the hot summer months, you need clothing that breathes and allows air to circulate on your skin. Good summer work clothing is made from polyester mesh or poly-blend fabrics that help air circulate and won’t rub on your skin during long workdays.
  • Anti-Microbial Finish: Sweaty clothes can get pretty smelly after just a few hours of work, which is why an anti-microbial finish is great for summer work clothes.
  • Segmented Reflective Tape: A big advantage that segmented style reflective striping offers is increased breathability. The reflective striping on a shirt can often feel like a hot spot while working in direct sunlight.
  • SPF Rating: If you spend a lot of time in direct sunlight at work, consider going for a work shirt with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to help protect your skin from sun damage.
